Had it not been for the 1972 blockbuster, Deep Throat, there would have been no Golden Age of porn and this blog would be about 8mm loops featuring hookers, swingers and addicts.  Let’s be clear about one thing, Deep Throat won no critical acclaim, had lousy production values (although stars Harry Reems and Linda Lovelace did a credible job with their roles) and would have been an otherwise-overlooked piece of pornography, not much different than other movies being produced in a similar fashion in the early 70’s.

Shot in only 6 days in a Miami hotel, the film’s meager investment raked in some $600 million – comparable to Hollywood hits of that time.  So what sent Deep Throat over the top?  Two things.  First, it was released to mainstream theaters, giving it an enormous potential audience.  As a result, it was reviewed like any other Hollywood release.  The reviews were scandalous, of course, so people flocked to the film.  Celebrities, politicians (the VP of the United States, no less) and average Joes were getting their first look at hardcore.
