A few days ago my wife and I watched a recent award-winning porn movie, shot just last year. Big name stars, lots of hype, lots of recognition. It had a big budget, a real plot and everybody on the planet talking about how good it was. It was even directed by a woman, so I figure it had to be more than the usual point, shoot, grunt, spit and cum tripe that we are normally subjected to these days. Boy, was I wrong. Yeah, it had a plot, it had big stars, even had some decent acting. But something was missing. I will set aside the fact that the sex was mediocre, at best. Something that should have been there, wasn’t.
I just figured it out what it was after watching this scene from Dixie Rae, Hollywood Star. Notice the picture. No, this isn’t vintage 40′s porn. It is an 80′s movie about the 40′s. It’s what the pros like to call a “period piece”. (there is a joke in there about a hot girl at that time of the month, but I will leave it to you to work out). Dixie Rae was shot in the old “film noir” style. Moody lights, lots of shadows, sharp, concise dialog, etc. In other words, this movie at atmosphere.
The one we watched the other day looked like it was shot under the florescent lights in your office. Every scene, same lighting. In fact, I’m not so sure that the residential bedroom wasn’t used for a different location later in the film. Take out the bed, add a chair and a plant… new place. The eye catches these subtleties, even if the brain doesn’t connect the dots, leaving us unsatisfied with what we have seen. Maybe I shouldn’t complain. I should be happy that very attractive women were willing to take their clothes off and fuck on camera for us. I suppose I should have appreciated the story, the sub-plots and the stabs at humor. Maybe if I had never seen movies like Dixie Rae, Hollywood Star, I would have. But once you have experienced satisfaction, it is hard to settle for something less.
