A few days ago I saw Annette Funicello referred to as “a plumper”. For all of those who just said, “Who the he…?”, let me just say that Annette would have been the 1960′s counterpart to Britney Spears. She began public life as a Mouseketeer and quickly moved on to sex symbol status as an actress and singer. Now, the Mickey Mouse club wasn’t the same thing in 1962 that it was when Ms. Spears was wearing her ears, and sex symbols have changed, too. There was no nudity in Annette’s day, but there was plenty of tease. Anyway, I digress.
To say that Funicello was fat is to completely misunderstand the subtleties of fashion, style, whim and taste. Not so many long years ago, men yearned for women with curves. The order of the day was “vouptuous” and lucky was the woman that qualified. Think of the sex symbols of the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s. Think I’m nuts? Next time you see a picture of Marilyn Monroe take a look at her arms. You will not find the scultped skinnyness of Angelina Joelie or Jennifer Anniston, I promise you.
Twiggy was the first of the skinny girls, the 70′s left us with the all-natural look, and the 80′s were years of transition. Keisha, Tracey Adams, Taija Rae, Anna Ventura, Traci Lords and Christy Canyon brought old-school sex appeal to the screen while girls like Barbara Dare, Lauryl Canyon and Kimberly Carson began to show us the new wave. Hardbodies. Soon to become skinny waifs with large, synthetic breasts.
I have to confess my preference for the former. That is just one man’s opinion, of course. But since the one man in this case is the one who writes the blog, you will have to patronize me once again. This gallery features an 80′s babe that could hardly be considered a BBW, but her natural breasts and womanly curves wouldn’t put her high on today’s fleeting beauty scale.
But as I often say, I may not know much – but I know what I like! Hope you do too.
