Gather around for a quick classic porn history lesson. In the 60′s and 70′s, when the US was still climbing out of its sexually hyper-repressive state, many film makers began producing “exploitation” movies. They came in a variety of forms: sexual exploitation (aka “sexploitation”), racial exploitation (or “blacksploitation”) or any other way you could exploit about any theme for a cheap thrill. There were always a lot of naked, or  semi-naked, girls, guns, bad guys, monsters, crashes, explosions and (usually) drugs. The sexploitation movie was softcore candy thinly wrapped in a semi-respectable veneer. Eventually, hardcore elements began to slip into some of these movies, which was good news for those of us liked a little more explicitness in our reality. Most of these movies were bad. Period. A lot of them were bad on purpose. That was part of their “appeal”. But they were cheaply made and highly profitable. Most of them came from the US, but there were exceptions. One of the best known, and most prolific, producers of the genre was Joe D’Amato. Joe was born Aristide Massaccesi in Rome and began his professional life as a very good cinematographer.

Eventually he began directing horror movies under a variety of pseudonyms. As he began to introduce more and more sex to his features, he became more and more successful.

He may be best known for his many movies starring the stunning Laura Gemser. You may know her better as Black Emanuelle, the gorgeous creature that launched a dozen sequels and thousands of ejaculations. These were some very creative movies that went well beyond the boundaries of conventional porn. D’Amato eventually moved to more conventional hardcore, but his movies like Queen of the Elephants (think Tarzan, not BBWs) continued to set standards for excellence, creativity and heat. If you like plots, costumes and hot European babes fucking and sucking, you need to watch Joe D’Amato’s movies.

Now, back to the subject at hand – classic sexploitation movies. The title mentioned above, Porno Holocaust is a nice mix of porn and horror. It’s the old plot line involving beautiful young female scientists (who also happen to be nymphomaniacs), a small group of stranded strangers on a (nearly) deserted island, an atomic mutant, voyeurism and, of course, a love story. Think of Gilligan’s Island meets The Swamp Thing meets Deep Throat… with a European twist.
